Happy Asalha Puja Day!

Asalha, the Month of July. This day, sometimes called "Dhamma Day," commemorates the Buddha's first discourse, which he gave to the group of five monks with whom he had practiced in the forest for many years.
See The First Discourse on Turning the Wheel of Dhamma, or in Both Pali and English

Upon hearing this discourse, one of the monks ( Ven. Kondañña) gained his first glimpse of Nibbana, and achieved the 1st sainthood(Sotapanna), thus giving birth to the Noble Sangha.

The annual 3 months Rains retreat (vassa) begins the following day.

As monks used to travel around during the Buddha's time. Lay people complained about the monks destroying their crops. Thus Buddha ordered his disciples to observe a pre-existing practice whereby holy men avoided travel for a three month period during the rainy season, in order to avoid damaging crops.

During Vassa, many Buddhist lay people reinvigorate their spiritual training and adopt more practices. In countries such as Thailand, the laity will often take monastic vows for period of Vassa and return to lay life afterwards.

The Kathina ceremony is held at the month after Vassa, during which the laity gathers to make formal offerings of robe cloth and other requisites to the Sangha.

But there's certainly better ways to deal with stressful situations. Ven. Thubten Chodron, a Tibetan Buddhist nun, is renowned for her practical (and humorous) advice in using the Dharma to address day-to-day problems.
Come learn from her how to keep your mind peaceful & your heart open even when you're under pressure.

Ordination Ceremony

Every culture have its rite of passage into adulthood.
For young Theravada Buddhist men and women in Burma and Thailand, they would temporarily ordain for a certain period as a Bhikkhu/ Nun when they are usually coming of age.
The Upasampada Ceremony(Ordination), is the initiation of ordainees taking up the Full Buddhist Monastic Code of Conduct (Monks: 227 / Nuns: 331), for temporarily or maybe for life if one decides.

The above is an example of a Ordination Ceremony taken at Aruna Ratanagiri: Harnham Buddhist Monastery.(Copyright to Harnham, Picasa Photo Album)

SPBS is gathering for one at the Burmese Buddhist Temple to witness our Burmese President, Aung Nyen Chan Oo, taking part in the Ordination ceremony, fulfilling his cultural practice.

Usually, householders and laymen will gather to make merits, on what is considered to be an auspicious occasion, by giving appropriate items to the Sangha. So don't miss your chance to witness such an event. You may bring along appropriate items to donate to the Sangha.

Date: 16 March 2009 (Monday)
Time: 8am
Location: Burmese Buddhist Temple
14, Tai Gin Road
(Next to Dr Sun Yat Sen's Villa)
Please refer for directions at
You may also take other bus services from Newton MRT.

Greetings: Happy Māgha Puja to you!

Dear all,

Happy Māgha Puja

It commemorates the unplanned assembly of 1,250 arahants in the Buddha's presence. One thousand of the gathered monks had previously achieved Awakening upon hearing the Buddha's delivery of the Fire Sermon; the remaining 250 were followers of the elder monks Ven. Moggallana and Ven. Sariputta.

This meeting is considered very significant in Buddhist history because first, it was done without previous appointment and was therefore a miracle, and secondly, all of them had been ordained by the Buddha himself.

To mark this auspicious gathering, the Buddha delivered the Ovada-Patimokkha Gatha, widely known by Buddhist today, a summary of the teachings, which all Buddhas in the Past, and future will teach.

"Māgha" is the name of the month (March) where this occassion happened. "Pujā" means offering. Overall, it means Offerings on the month of "Māgha" in commemration of the Great assembly of Sangha.

Now, let us reflect on the this important teaching, and honor the Buddha by practising it.

Ovada-Patimokkha Gatha

Khantī paramam tapo tītikkhā
Nibbānam paramam vadanti buddhā,
Na hi pabbajito parūpaghātī
Samano hoti param vihethayanto

Patient forbearance is the foremost austerity.
Liberation is foremost: that's what the Buddhas say
He is no monk who injures another;
nor a contemplative, he who mistreats another.

Sabba-pāpassa akaranam,
Etam buddhāna-sāsanam.

The non-doing of any evil,
The performance of what's skillful,
The cleansing of one's own mind:
This is the Buddhas' teaching.

Anūpavādo anūpaghāto
Pātimokkhe ca samvaro
Mattaññutā ca bhattasmim
Pantañca sayan'āsanam.
Adhicitte ca āyogo:
Etam buddhāna-sāsananti.

Not disparaging, not injuring,
Restraint in line with the monastic code,
Moderation in food,
Dwelling in seclusion,
Commitment to the heightened mind:
This is the Buddhas' teaching.

*1. 原文是pātimokkhe ca samvaro,意即“依照别解脱律仪自制”。
*2. 增上心(adhicitta)即是禅定。

Sādhu! Sādhu! Sādhu!
May you have peace at heart and live in happiness!

So what's cookin?

It's that time of the year again.
SPBS is going to hold its Annual General Meeting on 19 January 2009 (MONDAY).
Location: T1751
Time: 7:00 - 8:00 p.m.

But WHAT exactly is an AGM, you may ask?
But WHAT exactly is an AGM, you may ask?
  1. Well, it is basically a formal meeting to inform members about events that has taken place over the accounting year.
  1. And to give some insight on the financial status of a company.
  1. It is a common practice for all organizations.
And only the invited are privileged to attend.

Well that's cool and all, but what's the point?

The point is my friends, it serves as a reflection point for our society. It is for our members to judge whether we're on track to our Goals.
It is also for you to ask questions and you may even raise issues concerning the club. Who your thoughts and feedback could very well serve to strengthen our cause.

So why wait until you've graduated and join a company to see an AGM?
Witness how things are done systematically in an organization and play an ACTIVE part now!

And remember, its a formal affair.
