October 15th: Blog Action Day

Hey friendz,

Have you realised that the weather is getting warmer?
Have you realised that it rains even its a sunny day?

Have you realised that more natural disaster are happening around the world?

THE WORLD IS CHANGING!!! BUT NOT DHAMMA :)

Its Important for a us to protect our environment, our Mother Earth!

WHY???

It is a way of practising loving kindness, not just to ourselves but also about being considerate to other sentient beings.

Futhurmore, it is one of the 38 highest blessings mentioned by the Buddha. In the Mangala Sutta, there he says: "Patirupadesavaso" Residence in a suitable and pleasant locality!

Living in a place where the climate is inimical with frequent ravages by floods, famines, earthquakes and epidemics is just the opposite of what is meant by a suitable environment.
It was the increase in the global climate that causes the most powerful storms and other natural disasters.

Let make our planet a suitable place for ourselves and our decendents to live in.

HOW???

8 things we could do to save the environment

1.Reduce, reuse and recycle more!
2.Take public transport more often
3.Use an electrical fan instead of air-con when you sleep
4.Carry your own fabric bags or jute bags or any reusable bag when you shop.
5.Plant more trees
6.Turn off your electronic devices at the main power switch! It makes a difference!
7.Buy an Air con that has energy saving label
8.Change your light bulbs! Use compact fluorescent light bulbs. Avaliable at IKEA

Protect Our Planet, Protect yourself and others.
It is a Meritorious Deed,

A cultivation of Generosity and Love.
We are the Owner of our actions, it's result we shall bear...
So act now!

A Day to Remember: A Significance of Vesak
By Venerable Bodhi

More than 2500 years ago, a special baby was borned who become the Teacher of Gods and Men. His words bought light to the dull, joy to the wise-teaching humanity, wisdom, compassion and liberation from all unhappiness.

From the heritage of His Teachings, His presence can still be felt now stronger as ever. We use them to heal our pain, build our spirit, cultivate our mind, so that we too can partake of that He had tasted – The Taste of Freedom.

So, Vesak is not just another public holiday on our calendar. It commemorates a lot more. Come find out how Vesak can be special for you too!

What makes a Buddhist, Buddhist?
By Venerable Chuan Guan

Being vegetarian, burning incense and joss sticks, bowing to stupas and relics, chanting and meditation. What do they have in common? Does doing these entire things make one a Buddhist?

Some may think a Buddhist should not eat beef; others think that one has to make tons of flowers, fruits and joss sticks offerings to be a Buddhist. How true are these thoughts?

Stop wondering and get these questions settled once and for all. Come for our session and you might find some surprising answers!

VENUE: Tai Pei Buddhist Centre, 2, Lavender Street, Singapore 338823
TIME: 7pm – 9pm

9 June (Sat)
The Kalama Sutta
No need for Faith to Practice Buddhism?

The Kalama Sutta, often called the Charter of Free Enquiry, seems to suggest that faith is redundant in our practice. To what extend is this true? Is faith not a requirement for taking refuge in the Triple Gems and for practicing the Noble Eightfold Path?

Samatha And Vipassana Meditations
By Venerable Aggacitta Bhikkhu

What is the right balance of Samatha and Vipassana that one needs to cultivate in meditation and what is their role in one’s development along the Noble Eightfold Path?

It is often an unending argument as to which of these two types of meditations a practitioner must develop in order to achieve the various stages of Enlightenment. Some traditions assert that successful Samatha is the unavoidable first step to cultivate before progressing to Vipassana. Other traditions refute this and advocate Vipassana as the initial training. What do the suttas indicate?

VENUE: Buddhist Union, 43 Lowland Road Singapore 547444

Steamboat Outing (Updated)

Dear Members,

I am sorry for the late update of steamboat outing regarding the change of venue on Feb 9, Friday. From the previous information, it would be at Bugis, Chong Qing Lao Huo Guo Wang.
However, it would be change to Marina South, most probably at Zhen Fa Steamboat Restaurant.
Its a last minute change arrangement, as the booking of seats for the Bugis Steamboat Restaurant was unsuccessful. I was told to give them a call at Friday to check whether they had enough seats, which is a very late confirmation from them. Thus, I decided to shift the venue to Marina South, where Steamboat Restaurant had higher accomodation and reliability.

Time: 6.00 to 6.15p.m.
Date: 9th Feb 2007
Venue: Marina Bay MRT Station
Steamboat Restaurant: Zhen Fa Steamboat Restaurant
Attire: Smart and Casual

Please be punctual for the meeting. Latecomers, which apply to the ones would arrive later than 6.30p.m ++, would have to go to the restaurant themselves.
For any queries to to clarify any doubts regarding the steamboat event, please do not hestitate to call Wesley (92275280) or Xin Hao (94301046)

All the Best to All of You. May You be Well and Happy.
